A Few Words About Yoga A yoga class is a [...]

A Few Words About Yoga

A yoga class is a beautiful bouquet of people. People of all backgrounds, ages, religious and political views and economic brackets can practice yoga together. We don’t have to believe the same things or have the same viewpoints. In fact, the wider the variety of people the more beautiful it is that we can practice together peacefully. We cultivate a peaceful attitude in yoga—towards ourselves and towards others. Yoga not only brings together mind, body and spirit in peace and harmony, but people as well.

Within a class, it may look like we are all doing the same thing, but we are not. We practice in a class setting for mutual support and instructor guidance, but you practice independently within the group. Your pose is your project and you make it a gift for yourself. This is a creative practice and you create something that is right for you and your body—focusing on needs, not wants. You can subtract a little; you can add a little, so that in the end it all adds up to being just right for you.

As your yoga practice matures it becomes deeper and less superficial, more authentic and less artificial. When you tune in you find that your own experience becomes a tremendously valuable reference. You become more led from the inside, than pushed and pulled from the outside. Yoga doesn’t ask you to be who you are not, but to be more fully and comfortably yourself. One of the great journeys of life is the path of self discovery. How has your background shaped you and “who” is there behind the conditioning? People often ask what kind of yoga do you do, but more important than “what” kind of yoga you do is “who” is doing the yoga. To answer that question you have to slow down, relax and tune in, not for a few minutes, but for years.

Yoga is a journey towards greater awareness. With greater awareness comes greater responsibility. Awareness is sometimes called mindfulness in yoga practice. Mindfulness is another word we use to denote being relaxed and alert in the present moment. When we live mindfully, do things more sincerely and listen more attentively, then our yoga is a benefit to all, not just to us. It the end, this is why we do yoga, so we can be of greater service.

Yoga is about service. We need energy to serve consciousness and consciousness to serve energy. Yoga is about bringing things together. The word yoga and the word yoke have the same root. We bring mind and body together to serve each other. We sync body and breath together to serve each other. We serve the community and the community serves us. What we learned in the past serves us today and what we learn today serves us tomorrow. This chain of service and mutual support is strengthened by our practice together. A definition of yoga is “working for the greater good.” Let’s do it.

Turmeric is a spice that has been used in the Ayurvedic and Chinese cultures for centuries to treat various ailments. Research is showing its effectiveness in modern day medicine. Here are a few examples:

Has been used to treat wounds, indigestion, arthritis and skin diseases

May help prevent plaque build up in the brain; Indian cultures have reported low incidences of Alzheimer’s and this is believed due to the diet rich with this spice

Helps body eliminate cancer-causing toxins

Studies show improvement in those suffering from ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, fungal infections, eye infections, and multiple sclerosis

Most curry powders combine turmeric with coriander, cumin, fenugreek and red pepper.

I plan to implement this into my diet. If you are already using or have used this spice, please share your experience(good or bad).

Formaldehyde has been identified as a carcinogen by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; concentrated and repeated exposures to it increase the risk of cancer. This compound is volatile, meaning it is released into the air to be breathed in. Here are a few products that contain formaldehyde:

Household cleaners and laundry detergents

Air freshners

Carpets, textiles, plastics, and upholstery

Personal care & hygiene products such as hair-straightening products, nail polish, and hair gel

Baby care products and infant bedding

Car exhaust

Indoor and outdoor paint

Cigarette smoke

Plastics and building materials

Wrinkle-free or preshrunk clothing

There are a few things you can do to limit exposure like airing out your home. Also wash new clothes before wearing them. Use low or no-VOC(volatile organic compound) paints and try to purchase formaldehyde free personal care products; products may not list formaldehyde so look out for formalin, methylaldehyde and 1,3-DioxetaneQuaternium 15

PMS is a very debilitating disease for females. Here a few remedies that are practiced around the world that may help. As always, consult with your primary doctor before considering any of these:

From Japan: SHIATSU. Shiatsu is an acupressure massage aimed to get the invisible lines on the body working. Shiatsu is recommended for cramps. Women who have received acupressure for cramps reported a 72 percent decrease in symptoms.

***Try This: Firmly squeeze the fleshy webbing between your index finger and thumb for a few minutes, once or twice a day.

From India: YOGA. The postures in yoga help boost a weak pelvic floor. Yoga is recommended for a leaky bladder.

From China: ACUPUNCTURE. Acupuncture is recommended for hot flashes. Acupuncture can relive many conditions including menopause-reduced hot flashes. A study has concluded that women treated with acupuncture twice a week for 10 weeks had less hot flashes.

***Try This: Avoid spicy foods, this can increase symptoms.

From France: AROMATHERAPY. Aromatherapy is inhaling oils. It’s recommended for PMS mood swings. It affects the central nervous system and the endocrine system. Smelling scents such as lavender or vanilla can boost your mood and significantly help mental performance.

***Try This: Combine 6 to 8 drops each of geranium, lavender, and sweet orange oils in a diffuser. Sniff your way to a completely different calm person.

Here are 5 very good principles to follow whether you are trying to become leaner, bigger or just healthier!

Eat six times a day – multiple small meals and snacks keep your blood sugar levels more controlled and metabolism steady

Limit processed foods – try to remove these high-calorie, nutrient-poor foods from your diet permanently!

Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water and avoid sugar-rich drinks that will increase the waistline & decrease the body’s antioxidant systems

Eat protein – eating protein every couple hours will enhance muscle growth while releasing fat-burning hormones(lean beef, chicken, and fish; low-fat dairy; soy)

Use carbohydrates strategically – USE non-starchy carbs like fruits, vegetables and whole grains(high in fiber and raise blood sugar levels gradually). AVOID starchy carbs like rice, bread, and pasta(raise blood sugar quickly. If you use them, do so first thing in morning or after workouts when more likely to be used as fuel source)

The liver is a very vital organ that does not get as much attention as the heart, lungs, digestive tract and kidneys. Key functions of the liver include acting as detoxifier, protein producer, and role player in glucose management. Here are a few herbs that support the liver:

Milk Thistle – flavonoid silymarin protects liver from toxins; also is anti-inflammatory and helps replace damaged cells

Phyllanthus – removes toxins from the liver

Dandelion Root – used to detoxify the gallbladder and liver by increasing bile flow

Artichoke Leaves – has cynarin which stimulates bile production in liver and movement to the gallbladder

Boldo Leaf Extract – contains isquinoline alkaloids that cleanse and stimulate the liver

Astragalus – contain polysaccharides, monosaccharide, flavinoids, alkaloids and amino acids; helps promote liver cell growth

In addition, foods rich in sulfur also support the liver; they help detoxify the liver of prescription meds, pesticides and other environmental toxins. Foods with sulfur include onions, garlic, egg yolks, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens, kale and brussels sprouts.

With all the toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis, it is important to take good care of your liver! Following a healthy diet and monitoring what we put in our bodies is critical for insuring a healthy liver
